Virtual reality camera specialist Insta360 has announced the One R, a hybrid camera which combines a 360-degree camera with an action cam and an advanced compact in a modular configuration.
Instead of the tiny sensors used in GoPros and most other action cams, the Insta350 One R uses a larger 1-inch, 19-megapixel (5.3K) sensor.
The modular design allows photographers to use the same battery and image processor and ‘swap out’ lenses. The One R currently offers three lens alternatives (or ‘Mods’) – the Dual-Lens 360 Mod; the 4K Wide-Angle Mod; and the 1-Inch Wide Angle Mod, co-engineered with Leica.
Insta360 claims the 1-Inch Wide Angle Mod ‘achieves the best performance ever in an action camera, combining a 1-inch sensor with the legendary optical expertise of Leica and 5.3K resolution — in a compact, rugged body backed by Insta360’s signature FlowState stabilization.’ Stills are captured at 19 megabyte resolution.
Dual-Lens 360 Mod: Supports 5.7K capture on two lenses that cover every direction at once. It enables a real-time 360-degree preview on ONE R’s touchscreen. ‘Color Plus, HDR video and Night Shot achieve the best color accuracy and low-light performance in any consumer 360 camera.’
4K Wide Angle Mod: 4K@60fps, and supports up to 8x slow mo. Selflie-friendly reversible touchscreen.
1-Inch Wide Angle Mod: ‘A level of quality never before seen in an action cam.’ 5.3K video and 19MP photo.
Leica worked closely with Insta360 on the optical engineering and industrial design of the 1-Inch Wide Angle Mod, and contributed its epertise in image quality and colour reproduction.
Other features:
– Shoots Raw format with all modules;
– FlowState stabilization algorithm for ‘gimbal-like stabilization’;
– Waterproof (IPX8) to depths of 5 metres. Optional dive case for descents of up to 60 metres;
– Voice control;
– Auto Frame – identifies the best parts of any 360 video and recommends them to creators.
– Automatic tracking;
– HDR modes for both photos and video;
– Two onboard mics and an automatic wind-reduction algorithm. USB Type-C port and top-mounted Accessory Shoe for third-party 3.5mm mic connection;
– TimeShift hyperlapse effect, ‘Starlapse mode’.
The standard Battery Base can be swapped for a double-size Boosted Battery Base for extended shooting.
Insta360 also announced the Insta360 One R Aerial Edition, which offers a mounting system to make supported drones completely invisible and captures an unobstructed, airborne 360-degree view.
Local pricing is yet to be announced but in the US the One R is being offered in a range of options: Insta360 ONE R Twin Edition brings together the Dual-Lens 360 Mod and 4K Wide Angle Mod for US$479.99 USD; Insta360 ONE R 1-Inch Edition – US$549.99; and Insta360 One R 4K Edition – US$299.99.
