PHOTOKINA: A buncha Leicas

Photokina_dingusLeica definitely won the prize for most new product announcements at Photokina, with a flurry of press releases being generated.

As Leica deals through a small group of retailers who presumably know what’s coming, with other retailers having no skin in the game, we’ve condensed the material down.

The new releases are:
– A new version of the Leica Summarit lenses for Leica M cameras. The 75 and 90mm Leica Summarit-M-Lenses will be sold complete with a lens hood and a metal lens cap. The old Summarit lenses will be phased out.
– Two high-performance lenses for the Leica T camera system, the Leica Super-Vario-Elmar-T 11–23 mm f/3.5–4.5 ASPH wide-angle lens and the Leica APO Vario-Elmar-T 55–135 mm f/3.5–4.5 ASPH telephoto lens. Both lenses will be available early 2015.
– A new S (Typ 007) camera, along with the S-E entry level model. The Leica S (Type 007) is the new top model of the Leica S-System. It has a burst frequency of up to 3.5 frames per second, full-HD video in full-frame medium-format sensor size and 4K video recording and fast Live View mode. The Leica S-E is the entry-level model in the Leica S medium-format system. The Leica S-E provides practically all technical advantages of the previous Leica S (Type 006).

– Two new premium compact cameras, the Leica X (Typ 113) and Leica X-E (Typ 102). The Leica X (Typ 113) features a new Leica Summilux 23mm f/1.7 ASPH. prime lens and a 16.2 megapixel APS-C format CMOS sensor. The X-E (Typ 102) has an 16.5 megapixels APS-C-format CMOS sensor.
– Two new not-so-premium-but-still-pricey compact cameras, the Leica D-Lux (Typ 109) and Leica V-LUX (Typ 114). The Leica D-Lux (Typ 109) features a 16-megapixel Four Thirds sensor and a Leica DC Vario-Summilux 10.9–34 mm f/1.7–2.8 ASPH. zoom lens The Leica V-Lux (Typ 114) is for travel, wildlife and sports photography. It has a 1-inch and a Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 9.1–146 mm f/2.8–4 ASPH. super-zoom lens. It records 4K video.

– The special edition Leica M Edition 60 for the 60th anniversary of the Leica M rangefinder system. The kit consists of a Leica M-P digital camera (Type 240) and the Summilux-M 35 mm f/1.4 ASPH. lens, both in special versions created by Audi Design. It’s made from stainless steel and has a special anthracite-coloured genuine-leather trim, and it’s limited to 600 units worldwide.
– A 35mm rangefinder film camera, the Leica M-A (Typ 127). The feature set is identical to the still available Leica MP but it doesn’t have exposure metering, battery or any electronics at all. No battery is required for operation and the only exposure control offered is a choice of shutter speed, up to 1/1000 sec.
