With the price of colour film on a relentless upwards trajectory, Ilford Imaging Europe’s announcement of the Ilfocolor Half Frame SUC (single use camera) will be welcomed by keen analogue photographers around the world, with Australian availability from this month.
The Ilfocolor Half Frame is loaded with 35mm 400 ISO film and produces 54 exposures – twice the number of shots per roll. As exposures are in portrait format (with the camera held conventionally), the Ilfocolor Half Frame is easier for viewing photos on portrait-oriented mobile devices.
‘Half-frame’ cameras deliver twice the number of photos from a roll of 35mm film by dividing the conventional 36x24mm negative into two 18×24 exposures. Half-frame was an accepted film format, with Minolta making a series of popular half-frame SLRs and the ‘spy camera’ manufacturer Minox famous for its half-frame miniature cameras.
By comparison, 110 format, used extensively by snap-shooters ‘back in the day’, produces 13x17mm negatives – just half the size of half-frame cameras. Half frame film is higher in resolution and can be used to print big enlargements if hard copy photos are required.
The technical specs are simple: the camera has a fixed focus 31mm lens with a scene-sharpening f11 lens, which delivers crisp images from 1m to infinity. Shutter speed is also fixed at 1/125 sec, eliminating the likelihood of camera shake and blurred photos.
Flash recycle time is just 15 seconds and the camera is pre-loaded with an AAA battery.
