This weekend: Perth’s Photo Live Expo

Photo Live Expo will return to Perth this Sunday, July 28, offering WA photographers the largest annual event  including a trade show, workshops, seminars, photo walks, and more.

Organised by WA’s top professional photography retailer, Camera Electronic, the fifth Photo Live Expo brings some of the biggest names in photography to Novotel Langley, Perth.

Camera Electronic directors, Howard and Saul Frank, kicked things off in 2015 after noticing the WA photography calendar lacked a major annual event. Since then Photo Live Expo has grown each year, providing a platform for the photo community to come together in Perth.

Over 60 photo industry brands and organisations have stands at the trade show, with expert representatives ready to answer questions and demo products. Practically every major brand is onboard – Canon, Sony, DJI, ThinkTank, Tamron, Hasselblad, Pentax, Sigma, Zeiss, and so on – making it possibly Australia’s largest photo trade show.

New for this year’s show is a dedicated Pro Video room, which will have the latest gear in the film/broadcast industry and meets the emerging cross-over between stills and video shooting.

Entry to Photo Live Expo is a gold coin donation, with proceeds going to Telethon Kids.

There’s an entire day of ticketed speaker sessions and workshops, tailored to suit everyone from keen amateurs through to seasoned professionals.

The 30-minute speaker sessions are brand sponsored, with an ambassador photographer discussing their craft and sharing stories. Speakers include commercial photographer and Sony afficionado Mark Galer, underwater photographer Matty Smith, pet portrait specialist Alex Cearns, portrait photographer Mark Strachan, award-winning landscape photographer Tony Hewitt, baby photography master Kelly Brown, Walkley Award-winning photographer Megan Lewis, wedding videographer Nikki Fox, sport photographer Manuel Goria, and travel photographer Michael Haluwana.

Speaker sessions cost $13 pre-sale, or $22 on the day.

Four workshops, each running two hours, are for attendees who want to go a little more in-depth with tickets $75 pre-sale or $95 on the day.

They include a Print Workshop by Adam Monk, Lightroom by Nick Melidonis, Pet Portraiture by Alex Cearns, and Baby Posing by Kelly Brown.

A couple of videography talks are also scheduled, with sessions from cinematographers David Le May and Dave May.

Photo Live Expo is running two special events – a fashion show on Saturday night with a runway featuring women, men and animals; and a Fujifilm landscape workshop running over the weekend, with attendees using the new GFX100 medium format system. Both are also ticketed.

Eight photo walks, hosted by the major camera brands with gear on hand to try, will run over the day and are $25 to attend.

Finally, parents are welcome to bring kids and funnel them off to the Firetech Kid Zone for two relaxing hours. The young’uns will be stimulated with tech-based activities, such as flying drones. Suitable for ages 6 and up.

Photo Live Expo runs in Perth on Sunday, July 28, at Novotel Langley.
