‘Smallest, lightest’ Nikon D5500 in February

Nikon Australia has announced early February availability of the new Nikon D5500, ‘the world’s lightest smallest, and slimmest DSLR. (Fine print: ‘among digital SLR cameras equipped with a vari-angle monitor as of January 6, 2015, based on Nikon research’),.

D5500The D5500 has a February 5 release date but no published local RRP. Nikon USA is quoting a US$900 body-only minimum advertised price, while with an 18-55mm kit lens it will be US$1000 and with a 18-140mm kit lens, US$1200.

It features a 24-megapixel APS-C format sensor, a new monocoque structure, a touchscreen and a deep handgrip.

Other features include wireless connectivity, 39-point autofocus and Full HD video recording at 60p. In addition, in a first in Nikon DSLR cameras, the eye-sensor automatically turns off the monitor screen display when using the viewfinder and a ‘Touch Fn’ (Function) allows for easy adjustments of operational settings.

– ISO range from 100-125,600;
– 3.2-inch (8.1cm) LCD with wide-viewing angle and approx. 1-million dot resolution;
– Response touch-screen allows to tap to focus and shoot, or adjust settings such as aperture, ISO, and shutter speed;
– Touch Fn function allows users to quickly adjust key settings with a finger swipe when shooting through the viewfinder;
– Instant Photo Sharing capabilities via a compatible smartphone or tablet with built-in Wi-Fi;
– Streamlined design with monocoque structure and a deep grip. Approx. 124x97x70mm,  420g (without battery or memory card);
– 39-point AF system with nine cross-type sensors in the centre;
– Improved contrast-detect AF 20 percent faster than the D5300 in Live View;
– Up to 5 fps continuous shooting;
– Full HD video recording at 1080/50/60p and Full HD/60p output supported;
– Picture Control 2.0 – includes the new ‘Flat’ setting for maximum dynamic range;
– Built-in stereo microphone and compatibility with Nikon’s ME-1 Stereo Microphone;
– Creative tools include retouch menu, bracketing functions, HDR photography, interval timer shooting, vignette control.
