EBay booming in Australia

January 27, 2011: Australia has been acknowledged as one of eBay‘s fastest-growing markets.

The chief executive of eBay, John Donahoe, told a briefing of analysts in the US that Australia, Britain and South Korea were stellar performers, far exceeding the online auctioneer’s global revenue increases of 9 percent and merchandise volume increase of 11 per cent.

Ebay’s chief financial officer, Robert Swan, also noted that Australia was generating premium sales growth.

Speaking to retailer’s website Retailbiz, eBay Australia spokesperson, Daniel Feiler, made an observation on the current GST debate while commenting on the results:

‘Australian-based [online] sellers, who do pay GST, are growing 10 times faster than normal retailers, and that’s because they’re competing online and they’re taking advantage of this trend of online shopping,’ he said.

Ebay has nearly 100 million online users and shoppers worldwide. Mr Donahoe said its fourth quarter to December 31 saw an increase of 5 per cent to US$2.5 billion, which contributed to a full year revenue of US$9.2 billion.
