Hillvale launches Photo Trophy fundraiser

Melbourne’s next-generation photo lab, Hillvale, has launched the Hillvale Photo Trophy, an inaugural photo contest where all entries will be exhibited and up for sale.

Photo contests are a dime a dozen nowadays, catering to pretty much every niche imaginable. So it’s remarkable that in an over-saturated space, Hillvale Photo pulled together an original contest format that honours what they do best: printing and displaying photos.

All entrants will have their photos printed, via partner Prism Imaging, on Ilford Galerie Fine Photo Smooth Pearl paper at a size of approximately 37×24.5cm and displayed in the Hillvale Photo Trophy exhibition. Ilford Galerie Fine Photo Smooth Pearl paper has a ‘high-density, resin coated heavyweight base and smooth pearl finish not only eliminate glare and fingerprints but with its natural photographic white tint, produce prints with the true look and feel of a photograph.

Three winners will be selected by a judging panel on April 14, with each taking home $1000 cash, along with a $500 prize for the People’s Choice Award. Each entry will also be available for sale in an ‘open edition’ for $50 each, with Hillvale taking a 50 percent commission on sales. So as well as winning the cash prize, participating photographers have an opportunity to sell a few prints and have their work hung on a wall. Not a bad opportunity for an emerging photographer.

The Hillvale Photo Trophy is open to all photographers, including all forms of analogue and alternative photographic techniques, although entries must be submitted digitally as a print-ready file.

‘We are very excited to be launching this inaugural photo prize as a means of fundraising for our year of programming at Hillvale Gallery to directly support artists through paying artist fees, exhibition development and additional space builds to bring ideas to life.,’ said Jason Hamilton, Hillvale co-founder, to Inside Imaging.

Entries are $25 each, with a maximum of three entries per person. Submissions close Friday, March 31. Click here for more info.
