Canon Australia recalls EOS R5 C over AF issue

Canon Australia has issued a recall notice for customers who recently purchased the EOS R5 C digital cinema camera, after a autofocus defect was detected.

Canon Australia issued the recall notice on March 18, within a short period of time after the EOS R5 C was released.

The EOS R5 C, announced back in January 2022 with an RRP of $7499, is a ‘hybrid cinema camera’ that matches many of the R5’s top specs and includes additional video features. It has the same 45-megapixel Dual Pixel CMOS sensor, 5.76 million dot EVF, AF system with eye/head/person detection, rear touchscreen, hand grip, batteries, Cfexpress and UHS-II SD card slots, function buttons, and so on.

The big difference is the addition of an internal cooling fan that allows for unlimited 8K video recording, as well as the inclusion of a dedicated video and stills menu mode.

As a fairly niche product, Canon Australia is unlikely to have sold a large number of pre-sale copies before the recall was flagged. However, photographers and cinematographers who own the EOS R5 C should take note of the following announcement:
