Sony Australia has announced the FE 35mm f1.4 GM, a new high-end G Master prime lens for E-mount cameras, will be available from mid-February with an RRP of $2449.
The FE 35mm f1.4 GM features an 11-blade aperture, which Sony points out is a ‘rare level of quality’ for a ‘mobile lens’. Two XD (Extreme Dynamic) linear motors provide the efficiency necessary for precise AF and tracking, to achieve high quality resolution at any distance.
Algorithms, developed specifically for the XD linear motors, improve control response and precision, and simultaneously minimise vibration and noise. Sony adds Linear Response MF is ideal for ‘creative focusing effects’ when shooting video, as the focus ring responds to the subtle manual control. ‘The focus ring rotation translates directly to a corresponding change in focus, so control feels immediate and precise,’ the press release says.
The lens construction consists of two XA (extreme aspherical) elements to effectively maintain resolution throughout the frame. These two elements also participate in making that delicious bokeh more smooth and creamy. Discussing lens construction wouldn’t be complete without highlighting which element suppresses chromatic aberration. Sony has deployed an ED glass element, along with ‘other optical refinements’, to bring chromatic aberration to its knees, as well as to supress purple fringing.
The FE 35mm F1.4 GM has a focus hold button and focus mode switch to support smooth, efficient operation. An aperture ring with switchable click stops can be turned off for movie shooting, and when used on an APS-C camera or with a Super 35 angle of view, it can be used as a standard lens equivalent to 52.5mm. The focus hold button can also be assigned to several other functions.
The lens fits ‘comfortably in the palm of your hand’, measuring 76mm x 96mm, and weighs 524 grams.
Other features include:
– A 27cm minimum focusing distance and maximum magnification of 0.23x in AF mode;
– Dust and moisture resistant design, and fluorine front element coating to repel water, oil, and other contaminants.
