New Australian photo brand launches

Explorer Photo Video, a new Australian-based brand of photographic accessories, is in the process of being launched by Pixel One, current distributor of NiSi filters and Sirui tripods heads and brackets.

Director, Andrew Code, told Inside Imaging that Pixel One had been working on the project through 2020. Explorer launches this week with 20 products. The pro-oriented product range currently consists of ball heads and tripods; LED lights; release plates and L-brackets; and mobile phone mounts. They are supported at launch by a range of professionally-produced product videos.

Andrew said the plan is to have a range of 50 product by the end of 2021, among which will be a magnetic iPhone mount and a fuller tripod range.

The Explorer GX-01 ball head (with EX 37 release plate) has an RRP of just $45.

As the new Explorer website explains: ‘Explorer Photo & Video is an Australian family-owned and operated brand created in Sydney Australia and operating out of Los Angeles, USA – by photographers, for photographers. Our range of Explorer photography and video camera accessories includes camera brackets, ball heads, LED panel lights, tripods and more designed to inspire you to explore, capture and create.’

Products are sourced from China, with varying degrees of design input from Explorer/Pixel One. Andrew said Explorer is trying to be pretty aggressive with its pricing, and that the products on offer sit mid-range; ‘good quality products at a reasonable price.’

He said that while Pixel One has had considerable success over the past five or six years with the NiSi filter range and the other products it distributes, he was keen to go that step further which having control of one’s own brand delivers.

The Explorer AX-RGB AuraRGB LCD light panel (630 Lumen) has an RRP of $109.

Explorer Photo Video has a presence in both Australia – shipping from Pixel One’s Crows Nest, Sydney premises – and the USA, where it ships from Los Angeles (with premises on Santa Monica Bld, no less!).

The ‘beachhead’ in the US was established when Pixel One assumed responsibility for American distribution of NiSi. It now numbers major retailers such as Adorama among its customers. Explorer Photo Video has a separate US website and will ship to US customers from Los Angeles.
