With the Tokyo 2020 Olympics having now run its course, the Getty Images editorial team has shared the 25 top images captured at the games.

For many Australians, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics was a great opportunity to spectate a wonderful array of sport performed by local athletes and competitors from around the world.
It was a welcome break from the plethora of reality TV shows, monotonous news programs and daily political press conferences. Yep – there’s no doubt that many people locked down around the country would much prefer to be flicking through gymnastics, swimming, or something leftfield like handball and table tennis.
Under the back drop of a global pandemic, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics wasn’t exactly business as usual. But like always, the pictures captured by sports photographers during the event are top notch. From slow shutter speeds turning diving and gymnastics into fine art, aerial photos showing exhausted athletes sprawled on the ground, to simply mesmerising compositions shot at the decisive moment as the world’s best gave it their all.
Who knows how many pictures were filed by Getty Images photographers during the event. Tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands? But the editorial team managed to whittle it down to the best 25 pictures, shot by the likes of Australia’s Cameron Spencer, Adam Pretty, and Ryan Pierse, along with others.
And here they are. Enjoy!
