Canon Japan has announced several new products, including the R3 and seven lenses, are in short supply and there is a forthcoming delay.
Unforeseen demand is apparently the cause of the delivery delay, with the company citing ‘more orders than expected’.
The delay covers the EOS R3 mirrorless full-frame camera, RF100-500mm f4.5-7.1 IS USM, RF100mm f2.8 L MACRO IS USM, RF400mm f2.8 L IS USM, RF600mm f4 L IS USM, RF14-35mm f4 L IS USM, RF100-400mm f5.6-8 IS USM, RF16mm f2.8 STM, and numerous accessions.
The photo industry has grown accustomed to product shipping delays attributed to ‘unforeseen demand’, despite it being a relatively new phenomenon.
Camera companies may occasionally be impacted by shoddy sales forecast modelling. But given it has happened with almost all major recent releases by Canon, Nikon, Sony and others, it’s hard to believe so many are this poor at measuring demand.
This is compounded by the fact that there are other more plausible factors, such as supply chain disruptions, production facilities at lower capacities, and component shortages. For instance there is a semiconductor shortage, and a shipping container shortage brought about by the lack of air freight. One executive we talked to last week pointed to LCD panels being in short supply.
While these issues have impacted numerous global industries, camera manufacturers are yet to formally acknowledge whether they are also victims.
Instead, we’re led to believe that manufacturing plants are at full swing, with unbridled access to all components and international freighting, but it’s the overly-eager consumers who are creating supply issues.
