OFFICIAL: Smorgasbord launch from Canon this week!

UPDATED, July 6. The often-announced Canon EOS R5, along with its loyal sidekick, the R6, will be announced at 8am, July 9 on the east coast of the US (10pm, July 9 on the east coast of Australia) along with at least three four lenses and a couple of lens extenders for the full-frame mirrorless RF system.  Canon German also adds an A3+ professional inkjet printer to the July 9 smorgasbord.

Notices such as this one from Canon Singapore flagging a big announcement on July 9 are popping up on Canon websites and social media all over the world. Nothing yet from North Ryde.

While just about every large market in which Canon operates has a ‘Mark this Date’ post on their websites and/or social media pages for that time and date, Canon Australia is so far silent on what Canon Germany is describing as ‘our largest product launch to date’.

We won’t bother with the full list which includes bibs and bobs like lens caps and lens hoods, but the more interesting products are:

Canon EOS R5
– 45-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor;
– 5-axis in-body stabilisation (5 stops) 7-8 stops when used with in-lens stabilisation;
– 12fps mechanical, 20fps electronic shutter speed;
– 5 million dot EVF;
– 4K @ 120fps;
– 4K @ 60fps;
– 8K RAW internal video recording up to 29.97 fps. 4:2:2 10-bit Canon Log (H.265)/4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ (H.265);
– 4K internal video recording up to 119.88 fps in 4:2:2 10-bit Canon Log (H.265)/4:2:2 10-bit HDR PQ (H.265). 4K external recording up to 59.94 fps;

According to Canon Rumors, this is the video menu from the R5, confirming 8K video.

– No crop 8K and 4K video capture;
– Dual Pixel CMOS AF available in all 8K and 4K recording modes;
– Canon Log available in 8K and 4K internal recording modes;
– Dual-card slots: 1x CFexpress and 1x SD UHS-II;
– Built-in 5GHz WiFi, Bluetooth 5.0

US Price is speculated to be around US$4000, which would see it at around $6500 in Australia including GST. Release date unknown.

– 20 megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor;
– In-body stabilisation;
– 12fps mechanical and 20fps electronic shutter;
– 5 million dot EVF;
– Oversampled 5K Video;
– 4K@60p;
– FullHD@120p;
– Canon Log, 10-bit;
– Dual SD UHS-II slots;
– Head detection AF, Animal detection AF;
– Bluetooth 4.2).

Price for this little beauty is said to be ‘under US$2500’ – which might see it priced $4K or a tad over in Australia, GST included. Release date unknown.
