Canon unveils RF nifty fifty, 70-200mm f4 lens

Canon Australia has announced its two ‘most loved’ EF lenses, the 50mm f1.8 STM and 70-200mm f4 IS USM, will be coming in RF-mount this December.

The cheap’n’cheerful Nifty Fifty.

Local pricing has the 50mm f1.8 tagged with an RRP of $389, and the 70-200mm f4 RRP of $3079. (A shout out to Canon Australia for providing a local RRP with these lenses. It has been a long pet peeve at Inside Imaging when company’s don’t provide this information in product announcements and we’re forced to track down international pricing)

Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM

The iconic ‘nifty fifty’ prime lens is ideal for an enthusiast looking for glass that can be used in numerous shooting situations.
Featuring a brand-new optical system, the RF 50mm’s large aperture and PMo aspherical lenses achieve high image quality, even at the maximum aperture, capable of shooting in low light and with plenty of separation between the subject and background. The minimum focusing distance is 0.3m – 5cm closer than the existing EF version, allowing objects to be photographed even closer with a shallow depth of field. The 7-blade circular aperture can be used for a defocused background or foreground, as well as that ever-so-desireable bokeh. The RF 50mm f/1.8 STM also features Super Spectra Coating technology, creating a colour balance which reduces ghosting and flare, as well as aberration.

The RF 50mm f/1.8 STM has 7-stop image stabilisation when used with either the EOS R5 or EOS R6. It also has a STM for high AF performance.

Canon RF 70-200mm f4L IS USM

The RF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM telephoto zoom lens is the world’s shortest and lightest f4 interchangeable lens in its focal range. It’s a L series lens, so it’s geared toward pro photographers chasing high performance.

The lens is compact and light, weighing 695 grams and measuring 11.9cm in length, a 32 percent reduction in weight in comparison to its EF counterpart.

The RF 70-200mm lens features a new additions: an Air Sphere Coating, four Ultra Low Dispersion (UD) lenses, and a reduced focusing distance from 1m to 0.6m. At full zoom range, with its 9-blade iris and constant f4 aperture, the lens provides high quality detail. The RF 70-200mm features a 5-stop Optical Image Stabilizer, and Dual Nano USM which offers continuous near-silent focusing.
Fluorine coating and dust and shock resistance, along with heat shield coating and dust and water-resistant construction, keeps the lens durable and trustworthy in the field.
