Canon has announced the high-performance Speedlite EL-1, a top of the line portable camera flash, will be available early next year with US pricing set at US$1099 ($1540). No local pricing available.
The Speedlite EL-1 achieves the highest continuous firing performance of Canon’s range, capable of capturing up to 170 full power flashes in a burst without overheating, thanks to an internal cooling fan. Recycling times are between 0.1 to 0.9 seconds, and the power can go as low as 1/8192, achieving 14 steps of range..
With a lithium-ion battery, the EL-1 is capable of approximately 335 flashes at full power, and a battery level indicator on the battery pack will alert when it’s running out of juice. In Continuous Shooting Priority (CSP) Mode the flash output is automatically lowered by one stop, and the ISO speed is raised by one stop to further conserve battery power and reduce recycling times.
The Speedlite EL-1 can connect to up to 15 other flashes for ‘studio levels of performance’, with the radio wireless transmission opening up a number of options, including ‘second curtain synchro’.
The exterior has weather resistant sealing, similar to Canon’s 1D x range, and features the same electronic contact mechanism as the 600EX II-RT. The EL-1 has a user-friendly interface, featuring a joystick and enhanced LCD screen, allowing photographers to navigate the menu and change settings quickly. With 120 degrees of tilt, thanks to a ‘bounce adaptor’, the flash can be directed backwards to bounce and soften light. Two colour filters are also included in the box.
And last, but certainly not least, the Speedlight EL-1 is the first of its kind to ‘boast a “red ring”’, to ‘signify the professional-level performance’ and let people know you mean business.
