Sony announces FE 35mm f1.8

Sony has announced the FE 35mm f1.8 wide-angle prime lens, which according to overseas reports is affordable at US$750 and ships in August. ‘Course, there’s no local pricing or availability accompanying the local press release (really, why bother!), so let’s hope Sony Australia can deliver an attractive local RRP whenever it becomes available here. At 280 grams and measuring 65mm in diameter by 73mm in length, the lens is compact and lightweight.

The optical construction includes an aspherical element to suppress aberration and deliver high resolution throughout the entire image. A nine-blade circular aperture enables nice bokeh.

The AF is quiet, fast and precise thanks to a linear-motor AF drive system.

‘With this launch, we now have 34 full-frame lenses in our line-up and 52 E-Mount lenses in total including our APS-C range,’ said Jun Yoon, head of Digital Imaging at Sony ANZ. ‘The new 35mm prime combines outstanding corner-to-corner sharpness with a compact design, making it an ideal choice for a variety of shooters. This launch reinforces Sony’s commitment to innovation in the industry as we open more doors for creators to realise their vision.’

Lastly, the lens has a minimum focus distance of 0.22m and maximum magnification of 0.24x to ‘offer easy access to the world of close-up photography’.
