Sony announces 600mm prime and 200-600mm lens

Sony has announced a pair of big mother telephoto G Master lenses, the FE 200-600mm f5.6-6.3 G OSS zoom and FE 600mm f4 GM OSS prime.

Both lenses will be available in August, and while there’s no local pricing the Americans have the 200-600mm f5.6-6.3 at US$2000, with an eye-watering US$13,000 for the 600mm f4.

‘With two new lenses announced today, our growing E-mount lens line-up now includes 33 full-frame models and 51 lenses in total. The 10th model from our flagship G Master series, the new 600mm F4 raises the bar for speed, mobility and control in a super-telephoto prime lens,’ said Jun Yoon, head of Sony ANZ digital imaging.

This is Sony’s longest reaching prime lens, and apparently the world’s lightest in its class, weighing 3KG.

The super telephoto prime lens has two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors that drive the lens’ focus group to provide fast and precise autofocus, and reliable subject tracking. The motors use motion algorithms to minimise lag and control noise levels.

With 24 lens elements, including a large XA (extreme aspherical) and an ED (extra-low dispersion), common telephoto lens aberrations are suppressed. The XA elements, combined with new bokeh simulation technology, control spherical aberration to help achieve a desirable bokeh effect. Three fluorite elements also assist in minimising chromatic aberration and suppress colour bleeding.Sony FE 600mm GM OSS

The lens has an 11-blade circular aperture mechanism, coated with Nano AR to suppress reflections, glare, or ghosting.

Sony attributes the light weight of the lens to the fluorite elements, with fewer elements deployed at the front-end of the lens barrel. Magnesium alloy also keep things light, strong and durable.

It’s dust and moisture-resistant, with the front element coated in fluorine to resist dust and fingerprints.

Other features include:
– Customisable focus-hold buttons in four locations’
– Full-Time DMF switch for manual focus;
– Built-in optical stablisation
– Three different ‘Mode’ settings;
– Compatible with 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters

While Sony boasts it’s ‘the farthest reaching E-mount zoom’, the press release for the 200-600mm lens provides the specs in list form so we’ll do the same.

Features include:
– Built-in optical stabilisation with three different mode settings;
– Five ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and an aspherical element, minimises chromatic aberration;
-11-blade circular aperture mechanism;
– Nano AR coating;
– DDSSM (Direct Drive SSM) focusing system;
– Overall length of the lens does not change while zooming;
– Focus ring that features Linear Response MF.
