Panasonic has announced two new lenses, available from early next year, to flesh out the S series full-frame mirrorless range, a Lumix S Pro 70-200mm f2.8 OIS telephoto lens and Lumix S Pro 16-35mm f4 wide zoom lens.
The 70-200mm lens has an RRP of $4299, and the 16-35mm is $2499. The two new lenses bring the Lumix S lens line up to six, with 11 more under developed and scheduled for announcement by March 2021.
Lumix S Pro 70-200mm f2.8 OIS (S-E70200)
The telephoto zoom lens build features 22 elements in 17 groups, including two Ultra-Extra-low Dispersion (UED) lenses and 3 Extra-low dispersion (ED) lenses. The build suppresses both axial and chromatic aberration, and the aspherical lens also corrects ‘astigmatism’.
A double focus system suppresses fluctuation of aberration, even at close distances, resulting in better performance from the centre to the corners of the entire zoom range.
The lens’ Optical Image Stabiliser (OIS) complies with a camera’s Body Image Stabilsation (IS), and also works alongside five-Axis Dual IS featured in Panasonic’s S range of cameras to support seven-stop slower shutter speed.
Panasonic says the lens also ‘excels in video recording performance with a mechanism that suppresses focus breathing, which was a fatal problem in all interchangeable lenses designed for still image photography’. Fatal!
The exterior is dust and splash resistant, which Panasonic reminds doesn’t ‘guarantee that damage will not occur if this lens is subjected to direct contact with dust and water. It can, however, withstand cold climates up to 10 degrees below zero.
The use of a 1.4x Teleconverter allows a maximum 280mm, or 2x at 400mm, super telephoto shooting with maximum 480fps focus control. The filter size is 82 mm, with an 11-blade circular aperture diaphragm.
LUMIX S PRO 16-35mm F4 (S-R1635)
The wide zoom build comprises of 12 elements in nine groups, including three aspherical lenses, an ED and Ultra-High Refractive Index (UHR) lens. The optimum alignment of the elements achieves high MTF performance, a benchmark test that measures optical quality.
A double-magnet linear motor s integrated in the focusing mechanism, providing a maximum 480 fps high-speed sensor drive for fast and precise AF.
The exterior is, like the 70-200mm, dust and splash resistant. Both lenses also feature a focus clutch mechanism to instantly switch between AF/MF. The filter size is 77 mm, with a 9-blade circular aperture diaphragm.
