Nikon unveils Z 24-70mm f2.8 zoom lens

Nikon has announced the Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S zoom lens, which provides the Z6 and Z7 mirrorless cameras with fast new glass from Autumn 2019. While there’s no local pricing, the overseas RRP is set at US$2299.

The zoom lens, which Nikon says is a ‘must have’ for all Z series professional photographers, uses the new ARNEO coating to significantly reduce ghosting and flaring. This coating compensates light entering the lens from vertical angles, while the existing Nano Crystal Coat suppresses flare coming in diagonally.

Nikon completely redesigned this lens, and compared to the AF-S 24-70mm version it is 25 percent lighter and 18 percent shorter.

The weight loss is partly attributed to what’s in the guts – 17 elements in 15 groups. This includes two ED glass elements, and four aspherical elements, providing sharp ‘virtually vignette-free’ performance, edge-to-edge and at the maximum aperture.

It has a Stepping Motor (STM) for fast, accurate and silent autofocus, and a new Multi-Focus System. Nikon says this system uses two actuators to move two focus groups at once, enabling the lens to achieve focus rapidly from near any distance.

The exterior has an EL lens information panel to read aperture and focal length, or focus distance and depth of field; a L-Fn button to set 20 custom functions for stills shooting; and an independent focus ring and a customisable control ring

For videographers the lens minimises focus breathing, preventing the angle of view from changing when the focus is adjusted.
