Apple has announced a new 16-inch MacBook Pro, with performance increases Apple is touting as ‘up to 80 percent’ on the current 15-inch MacBook Pro.
It comes with a 16-inch Retina display, the largest to date on a notebook. Resolution is 3072×1920, pixel density is 226 ppi (almost as good as a smartphone!) , brightness is 500 nits, and colour gamut is P3 (wider than sRGB).
The keyboard – a weakness in the model being replaced – has been improved with 1mm key travel, a stable feel and a re-configured keyboard design – now with real ESC key included!
It comes with four Thunderbolt 3 USB-C connections and a headphone jack.
There are a range of processor options: 9th-Gen Intel Core i7 and i9 processors through to 2.4GHz 8‑core Core i9 with a Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz. RAM starts at 16GB and goes up to 64GB. Storage options start at a paltry 512GB and go to 8TB. Graphics are powered by a AMD Radeon Pro 5000M with up to 8GB of onboard storage.
The new MacBook Pro has a 100Wh battery with Apple claiming 11 hours of web browsing or video playback. The cooling system has been beefed up with larger fans and a larger heat sink.
‘Our pro customers tell us they want their next MacBook Pro to have a larger display, blazing-fast performance, the biggest battery possible, the best notebook keyboard ever, awesome speakers and massive amounts of storage, and the 16-inch MacBook Pro delivers all of that and more,’ said Apple senior director of Mac and iPad Product Marketing, Tom Boger. ‘With its brilliant 16-inch Retina display, 8-core processors, next-gen pro graphics, even better thermal design, new Magic Keyboard, six-speaker sound system, 100Wh battery, up to 8TB of storage and 64GB of fast memory, the 16-inch MacBook Pro is the world’s best pro notebook.’
Local pricing starts at $3799 for 2.6GHz 6-core processor; 512GB storage and AMD Radeon Pro 5300M.
