Lynsey Addario, one of America’s finest photojournalists, says she became a war photographer after becoming curious about the conditions of womens’ lives in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.
The Pulitzer-prize winning photojournalist appears in an eight-minute Vice Magazine video interview, which has her speaking frankly and honestly about her career, and how it has impacted her life.
‘I was curious whether their lives were really as bad as we in the West thought they were,’ she says. ‘So I literally just borrowed money from my sister and made some arrangements with the UN and local NGOs and went.’
The 44-year old conflict reporter has had an incredible career covering war and political unrest, refugee crises and famine, womens’ issues and more. She has been taken hostage twice, which she discusses in the video along with topics such as life as a female conflict photographer, her favourite photo, the importance of photographers telling ‘the truth’, and life and death. The video also shows an impressive selection of Addario’s photos.
Following the release of Addario’s 2015 memoir, It’s What I Do, a film adaptation is forthcoming, directed by Ridley Scott with Scarlett Johansson playing the photographer.
