Abraham Joffe scoops the pool at video awards

Sydney video producers Abraham Joffe and Dom West were named 2019 AIPP Australian Professional Video Producer of the Year last week for their spectacular wildlife documentary, The Virtues of Monochrome, with Abraham also picking up honours in both the two other categories as well.

The winning wildlife documentary short follows photographer David Yarrow as he captures spectacular wildlife scenes in South Georgia, a remote and inhospitable island in the Southern Ocean, home to penguins and seals with temperatures as low as -15 degrees.

Abraham said standing among thousands of penguins and seals in bitter cold and roaring winds is breathtaking.

‘Not to mention the challenges of wading through deep ponds of seal and penguin excrement,’ he added.

‘It’s a place where the weather can change in an instant, but these challenging conditions all transfer to the film so it’s worth it,’ he said.

Abraham Joffe, a full-time documentary filmmaker from Annandale, NSW, says his work has allowed him to witness the intense beauty and the extreme destruction of the planet. ‘Our main focus now is to make films that aid in the protection and conservation of the natural world,’ he said.

Dom West said that making the film with Abraham Joffe was an extremely memorable experience and in fact a highlight of his career.

‘Although we have worked on several natural history projects together, the sheer density of wildlife in front of you, combined with the proximity you are able to work within, meant that shooting this film on South Georgia was like no other project we have ever done before.

The Virtues of Monochrome is one of a series of documentaries by Abraham and Dom, which also include Tales by Light on Netflix and Big Cat Tales on Animal Planet.

The Professional Video Producer of the Year Awards are organised by the Accredited Professional Video Producers division of the AIPP. The other winners for 2019 were:
Commercial Australian Video Producer of the Year Award – Abraham Joffe and Dom West and Documentary Australian Video Producer of the Year Award – Abraham Joffe
