Canon has announced plans to release six RF lenses this year, ramping the lens line-up to 10 for its EOS R mirrorless full-frame cameras.
The lenses consist of a RF 85mm F1.2L USM mid-telephoto prime, RF 85mm F1.2L USM DS (Defocus Smoothing) mid-telephoto prime, RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM standard zoom lens, RF 15-35mm F2.8L IS USM wide-angle lens, RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM telephoto zoom, and RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM all-rounder.
While Canon offers an adapter to marry RF-mount cameras with EF lenses, the new mirrorless designed gear is declared as taking the ‘existing EOS System to new heights, offering even greater levels of performance, lens design possibilities and creative flexibility’.
This is attributed to allowing large lens elements to be placed as near as possible to the sensor, allowing light to hit it straight on. Additionally, the RF mount’s short back focus and 54mm mount diameter allows designers to have ‘unprecedented freedom’ to achieve ‘the world’s fastest autofocus speed for a full frame mirrorless camera system’.
