Oh dear! Canon leaks 90D, M6 II specs

Canon has ‘accidentally’ leaked promo videos and spec sheets for the upcoming M6 Mk II mirrorless APS-C camera and 90D DSLR. No pricing or availability is provided.

Oopsies! Canon Australia let the cat out the bag!

Those familiar with Canon’s marketing will know ‘accidental leaks’ seem to be a regular tactic to prolong media attention and build hype. While it may garner additional coverage, whether it shifts more products is anyone’s guess. Canon either uses leaks as a tactic or it’s a giant corporate colander. Sony on the other hand managed to surprise everyone with its A7R IV last month.

Canon Australia was the first regional branch to accidentally go live with inside info, by posting promo videos for both cameras. Japanese camera news website, Nokishita, has since published the camera spec sheets in English. In past Canon camera launches, Nokishita has been the leakee-in-chief. Perhaps the path was getting a bit worn!

Actual announcement date is, according to the well-fed rumour mill, some time next week.

EOS M6 Mk II
The M6 Mk II mirrorless camera has a 32.5-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, and is capable of 14fps maximum continuous shooting speed and 30fps in RAW photo burst mode.

The camera can shoot 4K 30p uncropped video, along with Full HD 120p/100p.

It features Dual Pixel CMOS AF for quick and smooth autofocus performance, and a Digic 8 image processor.

Other features include:
– Eye Detection AF;
– 3:2 LCD monitor which can tilt 180 degrees;
– Max ISO 25600;
– In-camera RAW to JPEG conversion
– Bluetooth connectivity;
– Weighs 408 grams.

Here’s the M6 Mk II spec sheet.

EOS 90D
The EOS 90D DSLR camera shares similarities with the M6 Mk II, including the same 32.5-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, Digic 8 processor, 4K 30p video recording, Dual Pixel AF, bluetooth connectivity, and in-camera RAW to JPEG conversion.

It’s basically the M6 II in a DSLR body.

When it comes to frame rate it’s a little slower, delivering 11fps. The camera has 45 cross-type AF points with face detection.

Other features include:
– 3-inch Vari-angle Clear View LCD II;
– 220,000-pixel RGB+IR metering;
– Weighs 701 grams.

Here’s the 90D spec sheet.

COMMENT: Whether it’s a cunning plan or corporate nincompoopery it still works out to be a cunning plan. Most people can take or leave the slick promotional videos which accompany new product releases, and a couple of updates to existing cameras in the Canon portfolio are hardly going to get the camera afficionados’ hearts racing. But by being in advance of the official product announcement, these two videos become much more valuable – contraband insider information if you like. I know it worked for me! And if there happen to be any competing new camera announcements from other manufacturers next week (and there definitely are), it works out that Canon has created some clean air for itself this week. So give that leaky Canon Australia employee a promotion! KS
