BIFB opens exhibition registration

The Ballarat International Foto Festival (BIFB) is accepting exhibition registrations for its 2019 Open Program, which will run over two months from August 23 to October 20.
The Open Program, formerly the Fringe Program, is the non-curated grassrootsy limb of the festival that welcomes submissions from all photographers.

Exhibitions appear at a variety of venues across Ballarat – from pubs, cafes and restaurants through to shops and community parks.

To register, photographers must pay a $450 fee – or become a member for $90 and pay $300 ($390 total); select a venue and press the ‘hold’ button; then submit images and an artist statement.

The fee has risen from $250 in 2015. BIFB director Fiona Sweet told Inside Imaging this is attributed to the festival running over two months instead of one.

Venue owners then select an exhibition, and negotiate an agreement regarding sales of works, commission, schedules and so on.

Those who do not secure an exhibition space are refunded the registration fee.

The artist is responsible for the printing, framing, and presentation of the work.

‘Open Program exhibitors will be featured in the festival program, promoted through our social media channels and be in the running for a $2000 first prize and a $500 People’s Choice Award,’ the BIFB website says.

Only one photographer can liaise with a venue owner at a time, so it’s a first-in-best-dressed scenario.

Applications close May 31, 2019, or earlier if all venues are allocated.
