Canon has announced the EOS R full frame mirrorless camera system, featuring a new RF lens mount which links with Canon EF, EF-S, TS-E and MP-E lenses via a series of lens mount adapters.
The new mount is the same diameter as the EF mount (54mm), but with a shorter back focus distance. Canon claims this has ‘paved the way for higher performing lenses’, and that the Canon RF mount’s 12-pin communication system is faster than existing Canon mounts.
One restriction: when using EF-S lenses, R system cameras crop down to APS-C format. Another: the first R system camera does not have in-camera image stabilisation
The new system will launch with four lenses: the RF 28-70mm F2L USM; RF 50mm F1.2L USM; RF 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM; and RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM.
In addition to the standard mount adapter, there is a Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter and Control Ring Mount Adapter.
The Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter is available with a variable neutral density filter, a circular polarising filter or a clear filter.
The first Canon EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera features a 30.3 megapixel CMOS sensor and the latest DIGIC 8 image processor, enabling shooting at up to 8 frames per second, depending on shutter speed, aperture, lens being used and other variables. (It pays to read the fine print on AF performance out in the field.)
Body weight is 660g.
Video is at 4K UHD video up to 30fps, and, with an external recorder, 10-bit 4:2:2 – but format is cropped to a sub-APS-C 1.7x. The EOS R also shoots Canon Log, providing 12 stops of dynamic range, minimal loss of detail in shadows and highlighted areas, and an increased range of choices when colour grading. Video can be shot using EF and EF-S lens via one of three new mount adapters, ‘each uniquely designed to meet the individual needs of the user’.
The new camera features Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus with up to 5655 manually selectable AF points, supporting AF at up to f11 with a 384 zone (24×16) real-time metering system. Canon claims low-light AF sensitivity as low as EV-6. Under ideal circumstances, Canon says, the RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens and the EOS R camera deliver ‘the fastest autofocus speed in the world.’
An upcoming free firmware update will enable silent shutter in continuous shooting mode as well.
Design features include a ‘multi-function bar’ just to the right of the EVF that will allow users to more easily access their customisable settings, such as AF, ISO and white balance.
The R system comes with a new piece of software, Digital Photo Professional Express (DPP Express). In combination with an updated Canon Camera Connect App, DPP Express enables users to send, view, edit and process CR3 RAW files on some iPad models (iOS 11, 2GB RAM).
Other features:
– EVF with 3.69 million dots, and 2.1 million dot vari-angle touchscreen LCD, plus dot matrix panel;
– ISO range of 100-40,000, expandable to 102,400;
– USB 3.1 in-camera charging support. Built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi;
– Single UHS-II SD card slot;
– CR3(RAW/C-RAW) and Dual Pixel RAW support;
– Dust and weather resistant.
The Canon EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera is scheduled to be available in October. No local pricing is available, but US prices are US$2299 for the body only. It will also be sold as a body-and-lens kit with the new RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM lens for US$3399. Converted to A$ and with 10 percent GST added, this equates to around $3500 and $5200.
