‘Nifty 50’, long tele added to Sony FE range

In addition to the RX100 III, Sony has announced two additions to its growing full frame FE lens lineup: the budget-priced 50mm f1.8 prime lens and the FE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS zoom lens.

Sony-50The new Sony FE 50mm f1.8 is a lightweight lens weighing in under 200g.

It ‘delivers an outstanding blend of performance, compactness and value, making it a perfect choice for hobbyist photographers and videographers looking to experience the benefits of a wide aperture prime lens at an attainable cost,’ stated Sony.

Inside the lens is a new optical design harnessing an aspherical element to reduces various types of lens aberration. There’s also a circular aperture ‘for smooth, creamy bokeh’. A metal mount adds to durability.

The 50mm f/1.8 will be available in the US in May 2016. US price is US$250 ($325). No local availability and pricing details have been supplied.

Sony-70-300The new Sony FE 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 lens is the first Sony E-mount lens extending to a 300mm focal length. Though it has a long focal range it is also relatively compact and lightweight, offering solid image quality without being a burden to a photographer’s arms and back.

‘We’re continuing to develop our E-mount lens lineup to offer modern photography enthusiasts more choice than ever, said Vivek Handoo, Digital Imaging, Sony ANZ. ‘The new 70-300mm zoom and 50mm f1.8 prime lenses represent two of the most requested focal lengths by our customers, making them ideal for those looking to expand and enhance their Sony α kits.’

Features and specs include 4 aspherical elements, 2 ED elements, and Sony’s Nano AR coating. It offers good close-up performance, with a minimum focusing distance of 0.9m and a maximum magnification of 0.31x, making it an ideal choice for tele-macro photography. This outstanding close-up performance also factors into the lens’ excellent corner-to-corner sharpness.

Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation is built-in for better handheld results. Additionally, it has a ‘linear actuator’ (oooh!) that apparently allows it to achieve fast, smooth and quiet autofocus, and is also dust and moisture resistant.

The new Sony FE 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 will be available in the US in May with a price tag of US$1200 ($1565). No local availability and pricing details have been supplied.
