‘How To’ guides tackle Low Light and Action shooting

Specialist photo enthusiast publisher Media Publishing has released another two of its popular ‘Photo Review Pocket Guides’ – the Low Light Photography guide and the Action Photography guide.

low-light-photography-cover_web320These are the 22nd and 23rd in the Photo Review Pocket Guide series, published in handy and camera-bag friendly A5 format and Ebook format, and rich with illustrative images and charts.

The Guides sell well in photo specialty stores as a standalone reference book and also bundled with camera and lens kits. They also double as handy reference guides for sales staff.

Retailer margins are from around 30 to 90 percent depending on quantities ordered, with even better deals for firm orders over 100 copies.

The series is written by Margaret Brown, technical editor of the Photo Review Australia quarterly magazine for the past 15 years.

The most recent release is the Low Light Photography guide, which takes the reader through the fundamentals of exposure, controlling ISO, image ‘noise’ and how to keep it in check. It deals with the techniques for capturing sharp, well-exposed images without a tripod, and shows you how to get those surreal long exposure shots of subjects like flowing water and star trails. Lift your sunset and sunrise compositions beyond the everyday using the simple tips provided in Low Light Photography.

Mixed lighting is a particular challenge – obtaining a well-exposed shot when there’s a bright light source in an otherwise dark scene. Low Light Photography shows you how – with a minimum of jargon.

The guide also tackles the basics of on- and off-camera flash, and explores some of the new and inexpensive lighting systems available today.

action-photography-guide-cover_web320The Action Photography guide provides easy-to-follow advice on how to obtain successful shots of all kinds of motion. ‘Tricks of the trade’ used by professional photographers are shared with readers.

Successfully photographing any sport or activity depends on knowing how to pick the right moment to trigger the shutter, being in the right place at the right time, and having the correct equipment set up with appropriate exposure controls to deliver correctly-exposed images. And of course sharp focus on fast-moving subjects is both critical and challenging.

All these issues  – and more – are addressed in Action Photography, which also provides advice on creative shooting techniques and post-capture manipulations that can be used to enhance a sense of motion or add movement to otherwise static subjects.
