Coolpix P900 has 2-metre focal length lens!

Nikon’s new Coolpix P900, available March 19, sports a champeen of the world 83x zoom lens.

Coolpix-P900As mentioned last week, GfK cites ultrazoom cameras as the only growth area in digital compacts, so an 83x model should really appeal to the ‘zoom for you buck’ crowd.

As well as the astounding 24mm to 2000mm (35mm-format equivalent) lens, the Coolpix P900 has a 16-megapixel sensor and ‘Dual Detect Optical VR’.  And if 83x just doesn’t do it for you, the Dynamic Fine Zoom function (a fancy way of saying 2x crop) will deliver 166x.

Nikon says the P900 has an autofocus speed of approximately 0.10 seconds, coupled with a shooting time lag of approximately 0.12 seconds at wide-angle and 0.75 seconds at full optical zoom.

Maximum continuous shooting speed is approximately 7fps (for up to one second). A Snap-back zoom button allows quick switching between wide and tele positions, while Moon and Bird-watching modes provide dedicated settings for capturing shots of, yep, you guessed it.

The P900 can record movie clips in Full HD (1080/50p) resolution with stereo sound.  A time-lapse movie function automatically creates 10-second movies from still images captured at various intervals. Built-in Wi-Fi and Near Field Communication (NFC) capabilities enable sharing of images and movie clips. The P900 has a selection of geolocation capabilities include GPS, GLONASS and QZSS support.

Local price not provided – it’s secret suppliers’ business. US price is US$599 (A$770 ex GST).
