Camera, lens shipments UP on 2014 levels!

CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association, Japan) figures for June 2015 show interchangeable lens cameras exceeding the volumes shipped in 2014 – the first time in several years the negative trend in camera demand has been arrested.

Lens shipments also enjoyed an increase compared to the same month a year ago.

Interchangeable lens camera sales (mirrorless and DSLR) were 8 percent up on May 2015, and over 13 percent up on June 2014 levels.

Most of the growth was in the mirrorless category, were shipments were 19 percent up on the previous month, and 22 percent up on June 2014.

This trend is reinforced by production figures, where DSLR manufacture is up 5 percent on June 2014, while mirrorless manufacture is 28 percent up on June 2014. Comparing Jan-June 2014 to Jan-June 2015, DSLRs production is down by around 9 percent while  mirrorless production is up by 3 percent.

From January to June this year, mirrorless sales accounted for just under one in every three interchangeable lens cameras shipped. From January to June 2014 the ratio was under one in four mirrorless.

Sales of compact cameras continue their downward spiral. Production and shipment of cameras with built-in lenses for January to June are down around 20 percent on January – June 2014. Of the 16.9 million cameras shipped in  this period, 6.1 million were interchangeable lens models.

Lens shipments are almost 6 percent up on June 2014, driving a slight increase overall compared to January-June 2014.
