Maxwell International will release a Canon-mount version of the Tamron ‘ultra-telephoto’ 150-600mm zoom lens in February, with Sony and Nikon versions to come.
Maxwell says the ‘expect to pay’ price will be around $1400. The lens is compatible with both APS and 35mm format SLRs.
The SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USB (Model A011) features VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilisation; speedy, precise USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive); and ‘eBAND’ (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) Coating, which significantly reduces flare and ghosting due to extraneous light.
‘We have been incredibly pleased by how the Tamron 200-500mm (Model A08) lens has been embraced by Australian photographers,’ said Brendan Lee, marketing manager, Maxwell International Australia. ‘But increasingly, customers are interested in owning a lens that provides an even greater focal length range, and that’s what we now deliver.’

– 4x ultra-telephoto zoom lens with a focal length range of 150mm to 600mm: The focal length range of this lens was extended by 50mm on the wide-angle side and 100mm on the telephoto side . Mounted on APS-C DSLR cameras, it has a 35mm equivalent focal length range of 233mm to 930mm.
– ‘World-class’ image quality: Employing 20 elements in 13 groups and boasting an advanced optical design, it delivers ‘a superior balance of resolution and contrast for sharp, clear images.’ The front group contains three LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements for effective optical correction, enabling the lens to compensate for on-axis aberrations at the telephoto end. Sophisticated internal coating technologies suppress ghosting and flare when shooting under adverse lighting conditions;
– Achieves a 600mm focal length in an extended length of just over 10 inches (258mm);
– Nine-blade circular diaphragm enables users to create subtle background blur effects (bokeh). The circular diaphragm retains a nearly circular shape even at two stops down from maximum aperture;
– VC (Vibration Compensation) mechanism creates greater opportunities for sharper hand-held photography – Tamron’s proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilisation system uses a three-coil system, which Tamron says delivers ‘significantly sharper images’ and enables hand-held photography;
– Ultrasonic motor drive for swift and accurate AF response. Tamron claims it delivers high torque, fast response times, and low noise. The full-time manual focus mechanism allows users to make fine manual focus adjustments at any time – even when AF is engaged;
– High-class external finish – Tamron has upgraded the cosmetic design and finish of this lens to create a more sophisticated, high-end look. It features a linear pattern rubber grip on the zoom and focus rings and a tungsten silver name-brand ring.
The lens comes with ‘Silkypix Developer Studio for Tamron’, RAW image development processing software.
