PHOTOKINA: Lumix GM5

Photokina_dingusPanasonic has announced the Lumix GM5, which it says is ‘the smallest interchangeable-lens camera with a Live viewfinder (LVF)’. It will be available in Australia in November at RRPs of $1099 (single lens, 12-32mm) and $1399 (twin lens, 12-32mm + 35-100mm)

panasonic-gm5_smlThe electronic viewfinder has a resolution of 1,166,000 dots and 100 percent coverage. A Touch Pad AF function enables simultaneous use of both the LVF and monitor for maximum control and more intuitive shooting. Eye Sensor AF starts auto focusing when the camera is close to the user’s eye. The GM5’s 920,000-dot touch-screen monitor is directly attached to the rear panel, removing the layer of air in between the two components to eliminate internal reflections.

The new camera comes with a 16-megapixel Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine processor with an advanced noise reduction system. The advanced Intelligent D-range Control offers wider dynamic range while maintaining smooth gradation and a new Detail Reproduction Filter Process enhances resolution and contrast of middle to high tonal range, for greater clarity in bright conditions.

Both auto and manual focusing are supported and the camera offers Focus Peaking in manual focus mode. Panasonic claims the Contrast AF system is accurate, and ‘Light Speed AF’ enables users to record fast action. Face Recognition AF is complemented by Eye Detection AF, which automatically sets focus on the subject’s eye. Pinpoint AF enables users to magnify the target area five times to set focus, simply by touching it on the monitor.

The GM5’s AF Drive communicates image data at up to 240 fps, outperforming many DSLRs in both accuracy and speed. The camera also features high speed burst shooting with AF tracking at 5 fps in full 16-megapixel resolution. Other features include a silent shooting mode, highlight/shadow control and a level gauge, as well as a maximum shutter speed of 1/16000 second. Creative Control mode offers 22 filter options. A new ‘Snap Movie’ function allows users to record video in a designated short period of time (2/4/6/8 sec) to create a show reel of ‘moving photos’.

The GM5 can record Full HD 1080 60p / 50p videos in AVCHD Progressive and MP4 formats with stereo sound. Dolby Digital ensures high quality audio recording, with an additional Wind Cut function to limit background noise. Integrated Wi-Fi supports flexible shooting with remote camera control from a smart device and fast and easy image sharing.

The GM5 features a magnesium alloy chassis, a three-strand aluminium dial and high quality grip in a choice of black or red. An external flash unit (GN7, black or silver) is bundled with the camera and attaches to the newly added hot-shoe.
