Tiny Lumix GM1 big on style

When it becomes available in Australia in December, the Panasonic Lumix GM1 will be the smallest model in the Lumix G mirrorless interchangeable series.

dmc-gm1-d-angle-h-fs12032_sFeaturing classic rangefinder styling and polished aluminium dials, the GM1 shares the same 16-megapixel Live MOS sensor and Venus Engine processor as in the well-reviewed GX7.

Panasonic attributes the miniaturisation of the GM1 to: a single magnesium alloy frame which maintains strength while reducing overall volume; the circuit board which is 30 percent smaller than the GX7; the shutter using a motor instead of a spring, shaving 80 percent from its size; and the flash is a pantograph-style unit that pops up and down vertically.

The GM1 will launch with a new kit lens, the Lumix G Vario 12-32mm f3.5-5.6 ASPH/MEGA OIS. This wide angle standard zoom lens has a compact profile, sturdy metal construction and a retractable design.

It will be available in December at an RRP of $999 for the camera and Lumix G Vario 12-32mm f3.5-5.6 lens. Colour choice is silver, black with a silver lens, an all black body and black lens, and silver and orange with a silver lens.

New lenses
Panasonic also announced plans to fill out its lens range with ‘the commercialisation’ of a new Leica DG Summilux 15mm f1.7 ASPH and the planned development of a new 35-100mm Lumix G Vario telephoto zoom lens in a compact design that also matches the GM1 camera.
