The product development pipeline at Olympus continues to flow freely, with three new outdoor models and two more in the Traveller series announced at CES.
Olympus claims the new Stylus Tough TG-2 is the toughest digital compact camera in recorded history (and will fight anyone who argues otherwise), with waterproofing to 15 metres and ability to withstand drops of up to 2.1 metres. It’s red and black or black and red all over, and equipped with a 12-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor and Olympus’ high-speed TruePic VI image processor. It also has a fast f2 wide-angle 4x zoom lens that can focus to 1cm and provide magnifications up to 14x with the camera’s Super Macro mode, and Super Resolution Zoom activated.
Built-in A-GPS (Assist-GPS) provides a 10-second satellite detection capability via user pre-download of 10-day valid satellite positioning information from the internet. (Say what?)
Its pugnacious little brother, the Stylus Tough TG-830, is a pocket-size rugged camera equipped with GPS functionality and High Speed Video recording. It has a 16-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, TruePic VI processor and 5x optical zoom lens, and is waterproof to 10 metres, shockproof to 2.1 metres and freeze and dust resistant. It’s the first Tough model to come with a ‘multi-recording’ function, enabling simultaneous capture of photos and videos.
Lightweight, stylish and pretty buff, the entry-level Stylus Tough TG-630 has a 12-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor and 5x optical zoom lens and is in a choice of blue or silver. It is waterproof to 5 metres, shockproof to 1.5 metres and freeze and dust resistant.
The new Stylus Traveller SH-50 features a 24x zoom lens (25-600mm equivalent), OM-D Class Image Stabilisation and sophisticated movie recording capabilities. With its 16-megapixel BSI-CMOS image sensor and TruePic VI processor, this model offers a wide ISO range (100-6400) and supports Full HD video recording with 60i and 30p recording modes.
The Stylus Traveller SZ-16 also features a 24x zoom lens and 16-megapixel BSI-CMOS sensor, with Dual IS technology for shooting stills and Multi-Motion Stabilisation for smooth movie clips. It is aimed at the camera user seeking a compact camera with a powerful zoom lens at a reasonable price.
The new models all support ‘FlashAir’ cards (Toshiba WiFi SD), which provide Wi-Fi connectivity for transferring photographs to social media sites via smartphones and tablets.
Once again, no local release details are forthcoming, alas.
