Amended copy, October 9: Snappit, a new online retail brand, which will be a ‘pure-play’ online discount camera retailer with a strong social hub to attract photo enthusiasts and bargain hunters, was launched yesterday.
The new website carries no public connections with any other existing photo retailer, and is operated by a new company, Snappit Pty Ltd, registered with ASIC in June this year.

The launch event was held at Flinders St Station, coinciding with Oaks Day at the Spring Racing Carnival.
Snappit will compete with other local online camera retailers such as Digital Camera Warehouse, as well as grey importers. It will offer cameras and photographic gear at a modest discount against most bricks and mortar outlets.
However, the site is a radical departure from most (if not all) online camera retail sites, with a range of features to attract repeat visits and encourage interaction from visitors.
One key feature of the Snappit site is ‘social discounting’, where visitors are encouraged to ‘Like’ the featured product to bring the price down. A pre-set lowest price is established and this becomes the target to be reached before a set deadline. There is no upfront commitment to purchase the product to be involved.

Visitors can qualify for discounts on purchases via a points system. They first subscribe to Snappit and then earn points by submitting photos, making recommendations to their friends, submitting product reviews. and other one-off promotional tasks (eg: ‘Tell us what you think of the new Canon 600D and you will get yourself 10 points.’)
There are several ‘achievement levels’ with the chance to qualify for an maximum ongoing 10 percent discount.
Snappit has ‘hit the ground running’ with a full complement of cameras and accessories, and photo printing services. Importantly, it has its own in-house copy-writer and projects a informal and fun tone which should go down well with consumers looking for something more than bald camera specs.
Snappit also begins life with search engine optimisation and an online marketing program already in place, and will feature on comparative shopping sites.
