Sony has dramatically boosted its offer at the premium end of the three key digital camera formats with the full-frame Sony Alpha SLT-A99 DSLR, the NEX-6 mirrorless interchangeable and a full-frame digital compact, the Cyber-Shot RX1.
Sony also announced a 16-50mm f3.5-5.6 PZ OSS lens for NEX-series cameras.
The A99 is the first ‘full frame’ camera to use Sony’s Translucent Mirror technology and features a 24-megapixel CMOS sensor with a base sensitivity of ISO 100-25600, which can be expanded to ISO 50 and ISO 102400.

The A99 will be available at the end of October at a body-only RRP of $2999 (US online price, $2798).
Following the announcement of the Wi-Fi-equipped NEX-5R a couple of weeks ago, the new NEX-6 is the second model with Wi-Fi and comes with a user interface that will be ‘more attractive to photo enthusiasts’ according to Ms Brown.
It has the same 16MP APS-C sensor as the NEX-5R but includes a conventional mode dial and XGA-OLED Tru-Finder electronic viewfinder as well as a built-in flash.
Once again, Photo Review has had a pre-production model of the NEX-6 for a couple of weeks, enabling Margaret Brown to evaluate it, but without any technical tests. A detailed ‘First Look’ with sample images can be accessed here.
The NEX-6 will be available with in single lens kit in early November with an RRP of $1299 (US online price, US$998.)

The new Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 features the same full-frame 24-megapixel sensor as the A99, and has a wide aperture f2 35mm fixed-focal lens. Macro is down to 20cm. The camera weighs under 500g with battery and memory card, making it far and away the lightest full-frame camera in the world to date.
It features a ‘multi interface’ hotshoe compatible with optional flash, electronic viewfinder, optical viewfinder or clip-on LCD monitor.
RRP is $2999 (US online: US$2798) and local availability is slated for November.
