Canon has announced the new EOS 6D, a versatile and compact mid-range full frame DSLR that is positioned between the EOS 7D and the EOS 5D Mark III in the EOS line-up.
Featuring a new, 35.8 x 23.9mm CMOS sensor with 20.2-megapixels (effective) plus the latest DiG!C 5+ Image Processor, the EOS 6D is only 15 grams heavier than the EOS 60D and, like that camera, is compatible with SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards (including the new UHS-I cards). The 6D builds on the success of the EOS 5D Mark II and offers full manual control of camera functions, along with new and intuitive automatic settings to assist novice users. The 11-point AF array has a high-precision centre cross-type point with an EV -3 sensitivity rating and the 6D sports a 63-zone dual-layer iFCL metering sensor.
The proprietary DIGIC 5+ Image Processor, which powers the camera’s fast 14-bit analogue-to-digital conversion, delivers smooth colour tones and gradation. The 6D supports a sensitivity range of ISO 100-25,600 with a low setting, L: 50 and two high settings, H1: 51200 and H2: 102400. Continuous shooting is available at up to 4.5 frames/second (fps) for up to 125 full-resolution JPEGs or up to 17 RAW images in a single burst with a UHS-1 memory card.
The EOS 6D has a 3-inch Clear View LCD monitor with 1.04 million dot/VGA resolution and a 170 degree viewing angle. A high-transparency multi-coating has been applied for maximum protection and clarity. When used for Live View shooting, this screen provides 100 percent field-of-view coverage.
Movie recording is available at multiple frame rates. The 6D can record 1080p at 30 (29.97), 24 (23.976) and 25 fps, 720p at 60 (59.94) and 50 fps and standard video at 30 (29.97) and 25 fps. Up to 29 minutes and 59 seconds of continuous recording time is available (with 4GB automatic file partitioning) in selectable All i-frame or IPB compressions with embedded time code.
The EOS 6D features a built-in Wi-Fi transmitter which allows the camera to share images and video with the user’s choice of Wi-Fi-enabled devices such as PowerShot cameras and smartphones, as well as the internet (including social networks). Direct wireless printing to Wi-Fi enabled printers is supported and a new, free Canon EOS Remote app available for iOS and Android systems will allow a smartphone or tablet PCs to remotely connect with, control and operate the camera. A built-in GPS receiver allows the 6D to record longitude, latitude, elevation and Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) as EXIF data for seamless geo-tagging while shooting.
The EOS 6D will be sold in a body-only configuration and in a kit version with Canon’s EF 24-105mm f4L IS USM zoom lens. Both configurations are expected to be available from the beginning of December, 2012. No local pricing details have been supplied for publication, but the Canon EOS 6D carries a US online price of around US$2100 (body only).
