Sony flags versatile new Cyber-shot

July 25, 2011: Sony Australia has announced September release of the Cyber-shot WX30, capable of 16 megapixel still photos, Full HD1080i video and 3D images.

The Cyber-shot WX30 features a 16.2 megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor (physical size 7.7mm diagonal or 1/2.3-inches) and new ‘By Pixel Super Resolution’ technology that Sony says digitally boosts the 5x optical zoom range to 10x without quality loss at the image sensor’s maximum resolution (16.2 million pixels).

‘By Pixel Super Resolution’ technology also boosts still image quality during movie recording. At a touch of the shutter button, ‘Dual Rec’ grabs ’12 megapixel-level’ still photos without interrupting Full HD video shooting.

The new model also features a ‘real time’ Picture Effect mode that broadens artistic possibilities with no editing software needed. A choice of seven Picture Effect options includes: HDR Painting; Rich-tone Monochrome; Miniature; Toy Camera; Partial Colour; Pop Colour; and Soft High-key.

The WX30 is the first X-series Cyber-shot with a 3-inch Xtra Fine LCD wide touch screen. It also features additional electronic image stabilisation for vertical and horizontal hand-shake correction. The SteadyShot Active Mode compensates for hand-held camera movements during Full HD video shooting.

Intelligent Sweep Panorama also features HR (High Resolution) mode, capturing 42.9-megapixel panoramas, viewable on a HD TV or PlayStation 3.

3D Still Image captures 3D photos without stereoscopic lenses, capturing a pair of frames in quick succession, estimating depth information to create a three-dimensional still image. Other 3D shooting options include 3D Sweep Panorama and Sweep Multi Angle.

No local pricing details have been announced at this stage.
