Olympus adds to PEN line-up

July 1, 2011: Olympus has announced the pending global release of three new PEN series cameras, the PEN E-P3, PEN Lite E-PL3 and PEN Mini E-PM1.

The PEN E-P3 is the flagship of the range and aimed at creative photography enthusiasts. Featuring a classic chassis styling, it comes with improved performance and functionality. Olympus claims the E-P3 offers the world’s fastest autofocus in an interchangeable-lens camera, with 35 zones that deliver tighter focusing and improved autofocus tracking.

Equipped with a new 12.3 megapixel High Speed Live MOS Sensor, the E-P3 also sports the latest TruePic VI image processor, which enables it to offer full HD movie capability plus high ISO 12800 sensitivity. The camera’s 3-inch, 610k dot OLED display comes with an electrostatic capacitance touch-screen that includes touch autofocusing. A new multi-motion, predictive algorithm system enables superior image stabilisation during handheld video recording.

The camera’s pop-up flash has a GN of 10 (ISO 200/m) plus wireless flash control. The PEN E-P3 comes with 10 built-in Art Filters with variations and Art Effects. New additions include Pale & Light Colour II filter plus Starlight and White Edge effects can be used with Art Filter bracketing for recording multiple Art Filter pictures with a single shot.

HD video movies are recorded in the popular AVCHD format and the camera has built-in stereo microphones to improve audio quality. The E-P3 also provides a 3D Photo Shooting scene mode plus a one-push digital 2x teleconverter function. A Level Gauge is available for display on the Live View monitor. The E-P3 will be offered in silver and black.

The E-PL3 sits in the middle of the range and is the first PEN series camera with a tilting 3-inch display (16:9 aspect). Weighing only 262 grams, it delivers the same image quality as the flagship E-P3 and also supports 1080i HD video recording. FAST AF (Frequency Accelerated Sensor Technology) provides similar AF responsiveness to the E-P3.

The E-PL3 body will be available in four colours: Black, Silver, Red and White. It comes with six built-in Art Filters with advanced Variations and Art Effects and boasts a maximum burst speed of 5 fps. An Advanced Live Guide is available, with instant recall via the Fn button in the P/A/S/M modes.

The PEN Mini E-PM1 is a new entry-level model featuring the same imaging performance as the flagship E-P3 model with Full 1080i HD video capture in an ultra-compact body weighing only 215grams. Its streamlined user interface provides easy, intuitive adjustment of brightness, colour balance, background defocusing and other photographic parameters.
