New Phase One back packs 80-meg sensor

January 27, 2011: L&P has announced a new generation of Phase One ‘IQ’ digital backs, with resolution up to 80 megapixels.

The top-of-the-range Phase One IQ180 captures at full-frame 80 megapixel resolution, with a dynamic range of 12.5 f-stops.

Phase One says that its ‘Sensor + technology’ can capture images with full 80 megapixel resolution or switch to 20 megapixels resolution at 4 times higher sensitivity, up to ISO 3200.

The unit also has a 3.2-inch touchscreen with ‘the highest resolution (1.15 megapixel) and largest display of any SLR type camera available today’, according to Phase One, and both USB 3 and FireWire 800 connections.

Its storage card interface ‘is so fast that it eliminates buffering delays, supporting continuous shooting until a card is filled,’ the company says.

L&P has also announced two other models in the new Phase One family: the 40-megapixel IQ140 and the 60-megapixel IQ160

The IQ digital backs fit Phase One’s 645DF and other compatible camera bodies.

The IQ180 back will start to ship in late April, with the IQ160 and IQ140 following shortly after.

An attractive upgrade program for previous P series backs will be offered, along with a trade-in program for owners of other brands.

L&P will be holding a series of ‘Open Houses’ for potential customers to have a hands-on demonstration of the New Backs. Dates are ‘semi-confirmed’, with a Brisbane date still being finalised.

Details will be posted on the L&P website once confirmed, but to date this is the plan: Perth – Monday, February 7; Melbourne – Wednesday February 9; Sydney – Thursday, February 10.
