March 31, 2010: The PMA NSW photographic industry first quarter review was held at the North Ryde RSL last Tuesday, March 30.
Over 50 people attended the meeting (pictured below), and some PMA members travelled from country areas of Bathurst, Scone, Orange, Katoomba and Port Macquarie to attend. Special thanks to these members for their interest and effort.
Peter Rose reviewed the issue of GST on private imports, and also spoke about the 2010 nominations for the Young Achiever Program. To date there have been a few entries received, and more nominations are required for a successful program to run in 2010. Entries close April 9.
Paul Dawson from Hydro Photographics in Port Macquarie presented a humorous and helpful look at the Fair Work Act after many months of research into the various New Awards that would be applicable to the photo Industry in NSW. Paul painted a clear message to business owners: Know which Award they are covered by, attend the workshops provided by NSW Industrial Relations, and read the documents pertaining to your Award.
An update of product releases at the PMA Expo in Anaheim was presented by Pierre Visser, Fujifilm, Paul Boniface from Scone Instant Images, and Paul Shearer, Camera House. Pierre Visser spoke about the various new releases of cameras, and also the vast range of software that is already available, and discussed the availability of software which can be manufactured by individual’s specifications.
Minilabs and the importance of store-run web activities to drive customer print/gifting sales was reported by Paul Boniface, and Paul Shearer gave a thought-provoking look at the economic trends affecting retail sales and consumption. Paul also provided some purchasing strategies that have been implemented by the Camera House Group central warehouse.
Paul Curtis discussed the consumer promotion for the Digital Life Expo to be held in Melbourne, June 3-6. Much of the promotional funds available will be spent promoting the show in the local Melbourne market, however, there is a national competition ‘Bring Your Pictures to Life’ and there will be promotional material available to consumers and trade across the states. Material for participating dealers will be available in May, but those keen to start promoting the show now can contact Paul Curtis on 0417
The Show will also be actively promoted on social networking sites Facebook and Twitter. Convention sponsors Olympus, Kodak, Nikon, Fujifilm, Maxwell International Australiaand Kodak Professional Imaging Solutions were thanked.
PMA NSW chairman John Ralph opened the floor to discussion on How’s Business?” and set the date for the next NSW Industry meeting to be held on September 7.
